Support the Effective Work of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking

Target: Myrna Jackson, Director of Operations at the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST)
Goal: Support the work of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, and encourage other organizations to adopt its comprehensive and collaborative outlook.
The Coalition to Abolish Slaver and Trafficking (CAST) works to rehabilitate victims of human trafficking in Los Angeles, California. What is special about CAST, compared to other human trafficking organizations, is that it provides comprehensive care to victims and takes substantial steps to attempt to integrate them back into society at large. Established in 1998, CAST is the first shelter in the country dedicated solely to helping victims of human trafficking and modern day slavery, and has unique insights.
While other organizations often focus on one particular aspect of human trafficking victims’ needs – such as legal assistance, emotional help, or seeking justice against the victimizers – CAST helps with all of these. The distinguishing element about CAST is its comprehensive and collaborative nature.
CAST’s network with other organizations involved in the human trafficking issue is extensive and impressive, allowing collaborative efforts to occur more easily. Often a significant hurdle in addressing the human trafficking issue is the fact that groups work independently, rather than interdependently. CAST works interdependently with other organizations, statewide, nationally, and internationally. The net result is an organization that is able to accomplish more.
By supporting CAST, you can encourage other organizations to follow its lead, and facilitate comprehensive and collaborative efforts to end human trafficking.

Dear Ms. Jackson, Director of Operations at CAST LA:
The complexity of human trafficking makes it exceptionally difficult to tackle. Yet, CAST LA has embraced this complexity and managed to address many facets of the human trafficking problem, from border issues, to the lack of legal status that victims have within the United States, to addressing their social and emotional needs. Many organizations focus only on one of these aspects, such as emotional trauma, without helping the victims to obtain legal status to avoid deportation. However, CAST LA is able to provide all services to the people it helps.
Additionally, the collaboration that CAST has carried out with other organizations is inspiring and innovative. Particularly inspiring is the fact that CAST LA is working with a group in Mexico to address the human trafficking that occurs over the Mexican border. Our hope is that as other organizations learn about the structure that CAST LA has, they can be inspired to adopt similar strategies.
