Protect Immigrant Children and Families: Stop Inhumane Detention Bed Quota

In August, you provided crucial support to protect immigrant children and families from inhumane and arbitrary detention. Now, we have an opportunity in Congress to take this a step farther.

For six years, congress has required Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to maintain and continuously fill 34,000 beds in detention centers. This week, Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced an amendment to the Senate to end the inhumane detention bed quota.

Take Action Now! Urge your Senators and Member of Congress to support Senator Coons's amendment and END arbitrary detention!

These arbitrary quotas have real human consequences by splitting up families and incarcerating them in under-regulated, often inhumane conditions without access to medical care. Further, these quotas serve no legitimate law enforcement function. Over half of the immigrants detained by ICE between 2009 and 2011 had no criminal history, and no other law enforcement agency in America detains people based on a quota.

Please join us in asking your legislator to support Senator Coons’s amendment, end the detention bed quota, and allow ICE to operate based on an individual’s situation and not arbitrary requirements for detention.
